There isn’t a recipe more sought after by chefs than that for success — in the form of three Michelin stars, of course. Just like the recipes crafted by the chefs themselves, however, there is a secret ingredient to the winning formula. That’s what Danish filmmaker Rasmus Dinesen sets out to uncover in his new documentary, “Michelin Stars – Tales From The Kitchen”.

“Michelin Stars – Tales From The Kitchen” gives viewers an exclusive, fly-on-the-wall look into the hush-hush world of the most prestigious — and arguably controversial — gastronomic system in the culinary industry. Two years in the making, the documentary explores the lives and views of 15 Michelin-starred chefs from around the world including Japan, Denmark, France and the US.

Culinary superstars such as Alain Ducasse, Guy Savoy, Yoshimi Narisawa and Eleven Madison Park’s Daniel Humm all offer their two cents into how one gets their name immortalized on the century-old culinary Bible.

The documentary also features global diners, food writers, hotel managers — and Michael Ellis, the Michelin Guide’s Managing Director himself.

“At a moment in time when humanity is obsessed with food — photographing every dish, worshipping cooks and flaunting trophy meals on social media — this documentary goes under the surface and offers an in-depth, honest and relevant view into the world and day-to-day of Michelin chefs and restaurants,” reads the film synopsis.

“Michelin Stars – Tales From The Kitchen” will be unveiled at the 65th edition of the San Sebastián Film Festival on September 23. There is definitely a lot of excitement for the new feature, not least because it will be the prestigious opening film of the festival’s Culinary Zinema: Film and Gastronomy Section. The premiere will also be followed by a grand dinner at the Basque Culinary Center, whipped up by a magnificent trifecta: Latin America’s Best Female Chef Kamilla Seidler, Alain Weissgerber, and 3-Michelin-star holder Elena Arzak.
